While her initial rise to celeb status was the result of her modeling career, and to a greater extent, her appearance on the reality television show America’s Next Top Model, her continued popularity has arisen from her discussion of transexuality and her personal gender changes. She is one of the first trans models to break through in an industry that is very tentative to significant change like this. Simon Doonan, the creative director of Barneys New York, told ABC News that, “Maybe it’s time for a tranny to end up on the cover of Vogue,” in reference to King’s newfound fame.
