The Bee Gees released “Stayin’ Alive” in 1977, decades after most of her famous musicals were made. But one clever fan wondered what would happen if you put the two together.
In 2010, a YouTube user who goes by the name et7waage1 gathered dance scenes from Rita’s films and carefully edited them to the beat of the Bee Gees’ disco hit. The video was later re-uploaded in 2011 and has been watched millions of times.
The clips come from some of her best-loved films, including You’ll Never Get Rich, You Were Never Lovelier, Cover Girl, Gilda, Down to Earth, Tonight and Every Night, My Gal Sal, Pal Joey, Affair in Trinidad and Miss Sadie Thompson.
Keep an eye out for some famous dance partners, too. Fred Astaire danced with her in You’ll Never Get Rich and You Were Never Lovelier, and Gene Kelly joined her in Cover Girl.
What makes the video so much fun is how perfectly the old steps match the new music. Her spins, kicks and twirls land right on the beat, as if she had been dancing to the Bee Gees all along.
The creator summed it up best: “Rita Hayworth and her co-stars are staying alive in our memories!”
So turn up the volume, and enjoy a few minutes with one of the greatest dancers who ever lit up the silver screen.
