A Police Officer Found a Little Dog Barking Alone in the Street. He Followed It, and Saved a Life

It was the night of Thursday, September 17, in Leawood, Kansas. A police officer on patrol spotted something unusual: a small dog standing in the middle of the street, barking.

The dog was wearing a leash, but there was no owner in sight.

The officer got out of his car and talked to the little dog, which kept barking. Then he did something many people might not have done. He got back in his patrol car and followed it.

The dog trotted about half a block to a house and ran up the driveway toward an open garage door. A second, larger dog, also on a leash, was there too, barking.

“Hi guys, is this where you live?” the officer asks in the body camera video.

As he walked closer, he heard a voice coming from inside the garage. “Hi, are you OK?” he called out.

The dogs’ owner had fallen and was lying on the garage floor, unable to get up. They had been there for more than three hours.

“Thanks to the resident’s loyal companion, our officer was able to find them and get them the help they needed,” Leawood Police wrote. The resident was treated by medical crews and is now recovering safely at home.

Police spokesman Captain Jason Ahring also praised the officer. “While the dogs certainly deserve the attention, we also want to recognize our officer for taking the extra time to investigate the situation,” he said. “That extra effort made a difference.”

One TV anchor summed it up perfectly: “This is like a real-life Lassie.”

For anyone who lives alone, it’s a comforting thought. Sometimes the best guardian angel has four legs and a very loud bark.
