Courtney Short last saw her dog Lilly in August 2021. After a breakup, her ex-boyfriend took the dog, and Courtney believed she had lost her forever.
But there was one small thing Courtney never forgot to do.
That is where Dirt Road Rescue stepped in. The volunteers scanned her for a microchip, “just on the outside chance that maybe we would get a chip read,” said Janet Jackson of the rescue. “And we did.”
The chip led straight to Courtney, who now lives in Boise, Idaho, about 900 miles away.
Here is the small thing that made it possible. Courtney had moved several times over those five years, and every time, she remembered to update her contact details with the microchip company.
“It’s very, very rare,” Janet said. “Courtney was diligent.”
The little rescue arranged a reunion in Colorado. When Lilly and Courtney finally saw each other again, there wasn’t a dry eye around.
“Had I not kept my information up to date, I don’t think that you guys would have found me,” Courtney told KMBC. “There were tears all around, and Lilly is just the best dog.”
Her story is a gentle reminder for all of us. When we move, updating a pet’s chip is probably the last thing on our minds. But as Lilly shows, it can make all the difference.
