A Whole Country Watched This Little Stray Fight the River for Hours. Only One Woman Could Reach Him

If you had turned on the television in Chile one Tuesday this October, you might have seen a little stray dog fighting for his life.

His name is Morocho. After heavy rains, Santiago’s Mapocho River rose suddenly, and the stray became trapped on a concrete structure in the middle of the rushing water.

Firefighters, city workers and even a special police tactical unit tried to reach him. The city’s mayor, Mario Desbordes, came to the scene. TV stations broadcast the rescue live.

But Morocho was frightened, and he wasn’t going to make it easy. In drone footage, he darts past one rescuer, dodges a lasso, and even jumps back into the current.

The water carried him downstream. Shivering, he found small spots to stand on along the way. Then, at last, he found a part of the riverbank he could climb.

That’s when a woman who knew Morocho ran across a highway toward him. Where no one else had managed, she earned his trust. “I can’t let him go,” she said, according to ABC News, as she lifted him onto the grass.

Morocho was taken to the city’s veterinary clinic. Vets said he was tired, with only minor injuries, and expected to recover quickly. Two other dogs were also saved from the river that day.

And Morocho’s story got an even happier ending. Many people wanted to adopt him, but the city’s security department had recently lost its beloved mascot and asked to keep him. The mayor said yes. Morocho is now, as he put it, a “municipal employee.”

From a scared stray in a raging river to a city’s new best friend, this little dog has captured hearts far beyond Chile.
