She was 30 years old, from Zanesville, Ohio, and she told the judges that when she sang, she went by the name Nightbirde. She was there alone, and she was going to sing a song she had written called “It’s OK.”
Then one of the judges asked what she did for a living.
She said she hadn’t worked for a few years. “I’ve been dealing with cancer,” she said. The last time she was checked, she told them, she had some cancer in her lungs, her spine and her liver.
The room went quiet. Yet Jane kept smiling. “It’s important that everyone knows I’m so much more than the bad things that happened to me,” she said.
Then she sang. “It’s OK if you’re lost,” she sang. “We’re all a little lost, and it’s all right.”
Her voice was soft and clear and honest, and when she finished, the judges were stunned. Howie Mandel said it was the most authentic thing he had heard all season. Simon was moved, too. Then he leaned forward and pressed the Golden Buzzer.
Later in the video, she shares the words that touched so many people. “I have a 2% chance of survival,” she said, “but 2% is not 0%. 2% is something.”
Later that summer, she had to leave the show because her health had taken a turn for the worse.
Jane passed away in February 2022, at the age of 31. Her family said her lasting legacy would be “the gift of hope she gave to so many.”
