He Was Found in a Shoebox in a War Zone. Years Later, He Walked Onto the X Factor Stage and Sang “Imagine”

In August 2011, a young man named Emmanuel Kelly walked onto the stage of The X Factor in Australia. He said he was 17. But when the judges asked his age, he admitted he wasn’t really sure.

“I was born with no birth certificate, no passport, nothing,” he said.

He told them he was born in the middle of a war zone in Iraq. He and his brother, Ahmed, were found by nuns in a shoebox in a park and taken to an orphanage. “You’d hear shots, noises that we didn’t understand,” he said.

Both boys were born with badly underdeveloped arms and legs, which has been blamed on chemical warfare.

Then one day, an Australian woman named Moira Kelly walked through the orphanage door. She ran a children’s charity called the Children First Foundation. She took both boys to Australia for surgery, and then, as Emmanuel put it, “Mom fell in love with both of us.” She adopted them.

“It was like looking at an angel,” he said. “My hero would have to be my mother.”

Then he sang John Lennon’s “Imagine.”

Backstage, Moira couldn’t hold it in. “That’s my boy! That’s my boy!”

When he finished, the judges and the audience were on their feet. “I don’t think I’ve ever been moved as much as I was by that performance,” judge Ronan Keating said.

Emmanuel didn’t win. He was voted off before he could reach the top 24. But clips of his performances have since been watched hundreds of millions of times.

He kept singing. In 2024, he was an opening act for Coldplay on their tour in Australia and New Zealand. His brother Ahmed became a Paralympic swimmer.
