In 1944, K.T. Robbins was a 24-year-old American soldier stationed in Briey, a small town in eastern France.

There he met an 18-year-old French girl named Jeannine Ganaye. They spent about two months together and fell in love.

Then his unit was sent to the front, and he had to leave in a hurry. He told her he might come back for her someday.

He never did. After the war, Robbins went home and got married. He and his wife, Lillian, were together for 70 years, until she died in 2015.

In France, Jeannine married in 1949 and raised five children.

But Robbins kept one thing all those years. A small black-and-white photo of Jeannine.

In 2019, French TV reporters from France 2 interviewed him in the United States about the war. He showed them the photo.

The reporters went looking for her. And they found her, now 92 and living in a retirement home not far from where they had met.

That June, Robbins, now 97, traveled to France for the 75th anniversary of D-Day. And this time, he got to see her.

In this video, you can watch the moment they hold each other again after 75 years.

“You never got out of my heart,” he told her.

“I always thought about him,” she said. “I always wondered, will he come back?”

When it was time to go, they promised to see each other again.

“Jeannine, I love you,” he said.
