The two first met backstage at the Grand Ole Opry. For years they toured together, sang together and leaned on each other through hard times.
In 1967, they released a playful duet called “Jackson.” The song had been written in 1963 by Billy Edd Wheeler and Jerry Leiber, and it was all about a married couple who argue their way across the country.
With Johnny and June singing it, it was pure fire. “Jackson” went to No. 2 on the country chart, and in 1968 it won them a Grammy for best country duet.
That same year, in the middle of a concert in London, Ontario, Johnny stopped the show and asked June to marry him, right there in front of the crowd. She said yes.
They were married on March 1, 1968, in Franklin, Kentucky. Two years later their son, John Carter Cash, was born.
From 1969 to 1971, Johnny hosted his own TV show on ABC, taped at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. And of course, June came out to sing “Jackson” with him.
Just watch them in this video. The teasing looks, the grins, the way they lean in. You can’t fake that.
June passed away on May 15, 2003, at 73. Johnny followed her less than four months later, on September 12, 2003.
They were together to the very end.
