Every pet owner knows that sinking feeling when a beloved dog slips out the door and vanishes. One woman in Tampa, Florida, lived that nightmare on September 30, but her clever German shepherd seemed to know exactly where to go for help.
Security footage released by the Tampa Police Department shows the dog strolling right up to the front door of the department’s District Two office on North 30th Street, as if he had an appointment. When an officer opened the door, the friendly pup was more than happy to say hello.
Officers jokingly called him an “unexpected K-9 applicant.” Instead of signing him up, an officer took him to a veterinarian to be checked over and scanned his microchip. That tiny chip did its job and led police straight to his worried owner.
Body camera video captures the sweet phone call. “I’m not so good. I lost my dog,” the woman says. When the officer tells her, “I have him,” she can hardly believe her ears. “I was crying this morning,” she admits. “Thank you, sir. Thank you. He made me crazy!”
Moments later, she wraps her arms around her runaway boy as he hops out of the patrol car, and it’s hard to tell who is happier.
“This four-legged visitor was ready to join the team, but unfortunately, our K-9 roster is currently full,” the Tampa Police Department wrote. “He may not have gotten the job, but he definitely stole our hearts.” Police say it’s also a gentle reminder for every pet parent: a microchip can turn a frightening day into a happy ending.
