John Lennon Has Been Gone Over 40 Years. Then Paul Turned Around at Glastonbury, and John Was Singing With Him Again

In June 2022, just days after his 80th birthday, Paul McCartney headlined the Glastonbury Festival in England, in front of a huge crowd.

It was already a night to remember. Dave Grohl flew in from America to join him. Bruce Springsteen came out too.

But the moment people are still talking about came when Paul introduced a song from the Beatles’ final years.

“I’ve got a special little thing here,” he told the crowd.

He explained that filmmaker Peter Jackson, who made the Beatles documentary Get Back, had called him one day. Jackson’s team had found a way to take John Lennon’s voice from the old recordings and separate it from everything else. That meant Paul could sing live with John again. “He said, do you fancy that?” Paul remembered.

So the band started “I’ve Got a Feeling,” the song the Beatles played on a London rooftop in January 1969.

Paul sings the first part. Then John appears on the giant screen behind the stage, young, long-haired and full of life, and his voice fills the field. The two of them trade lines, just as they did more than 50 years before.

Watch Paul as he turns to look up at his old friend on the screen.

“That’s so special for me, man,” he told the crowd afterward. “I know it’s virtual, but come on, it’s John. We’re back together.”

For anyone who grew up with the Beatles, it’s a moment that brings a lump to the throat. Two old friends, side by side one more time.
