A Firefighter Helped Deliver a Baby on an Emergency Call. Later, He Became Her Dad

Marc Hadden went out on an emergency call expecting to help a stranger.

He did not know he was about to meet his daughter.

In November 2011, the Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, firefighter and his crew responded to a woman in labor. There was no time to reach the hospital before the baby arrived.

Hadden helped deliver the little girl in the ambulance and cared for her as the crew got mother and baby to the hospital.

Later, he learned that the child's mother wanted to arrange an adoption.

Marc and his wife had two sons and had talked about welcoming another child. This unexpected conversation gave them a possibility they had not imagined when the day began.

They spoke with the baby's mother and began the process. The little girl came home with them two days later. The adoption was completed in March 2012.

They named her Rebecca Grace. She became known as Gracie.

When news outlets visited the family in 2017, the story was no longer just about an extraordinary emergency call. It was about school plans, gymnastics, soccer, two big brothers, and the everyday life of a loved child.

Hadden said the family had not hidden her beginnings from her. As a little girl, she knew that her father had helped deliver her in an ambulance.

There is tenderness in that detail. The person who helped her take her first breaths was also there for the ordinary days that followed.

The video looks back at their story. It is not a new adoption, and the little girl shown is not still five today.

What lasts is the decision at its center: one family was ready to open its home, and an emergency meeting became a lifelong bond.
